Breaking Free from the Chains of Administration

A few months ago, I would have laughed at the idea of building software. My journey started as a teacher, moved through law enforcement, and included years of writing and creating art. Yet here I am, at the helm of Annwn, a venture I embarked on driven by frustration.

The Teacher's Dilemma

After over 25 years in education, I watched as teachers became increasingly burdened by administration rather than focusing on inspiring students. Every new initiative brought more paperwork and less time for meaningful interactions. It became a cycle of endless forms and reports; all of which were supposedly intended to improve the educational experience, but left educators feeling stretched and drained.

Finding a Solution

In a system that seemed to thrive on bureaucracy, the simple truth was that schools lacked time. Budgets got tighter, expectations soared, yet the quality of education was expected to improve. My best lessons were never crafted around paperwork but stemmed from time to think, plan, and adapt to my students' needs. Frustrated by this realization, I opted for voluntary redundancy and took a stand.

I reached out to politicians and education leaders, voicing my concerns about the growing disconnect between the classroom experience and administrative burdens. The replies were courteous but ineffective; change didn’t materialize. Instead of wallowing in frustration, I decided to take action.

Annwn: The Birth of a Solution

This led to the inception of Annwn. The mission was simple yet profound: to create software not for technology’s sake but to address real issues faced by teachers and other professionals. Annwn starts every project by asking, "What is annoying someone right now?"

It could be a fire marshal managing compliance, a teacher drafting a scheme of work, a business owner overwhelmed by paperwork, or even my wife attempting to track medications and appointments. Every piece of software we develop addresses these headaches.

A Reflection on Our Mission

The philosophy at Annwn is clear: we must give people back their time. Each product we create is evaluated based on one fundamental question: does it truly save time? If yes, we forge ahead; if not, we reevaluate. It’s early in Annwn’s journey—some products are complete, some evolving, and others are mere notes waiting for their turn—but they all share a common goal: to empower those who need it most.

Thank you for visiting our journey, and welcome to Annwn.
